Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a classic sextet structure, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out shortly after, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998,
