Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to raise the level of equippable items like weapons or armor, as well as trinkets up to a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Upgrades to gear can boost its physical strength, spell power and health (for armor and rings) or add bonuses while it's in your inventory. You can make upgrade components or buy them from vendors. You can also collect or drop them from other players or receive them as a reward. Upgrade components can be inserted into weapons, armor and trinkets. They can also be slid to gathering tools. However, the majority of upgrade components are not able to be salvaged or replaced, unless through the use of an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is the glyphs. These can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.

Depending on the type of item, upgrading it may cost Dilithium or gold. Additionally, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests required to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum upgrade level. Upgrading to the highest upgrade level can be expensive, especially when you're upgrading gear for PvE.

Upgrades can also modify a weapon's ammunition, or damage die size. They can also change the special characteristics of a weapon like its bulky or operative property, or its hand requirement. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.

Before you make a decision before making a decision, you must consider the costs involved in upgrading an item. Spend your gold on rare items and not on items of the standard or magical level. The upgrading of these items wastes precious resources, and you'll soon discover that rare gear is superior to them.
